It has happened to all of us, the frustration of realising that you have a stain on your favourite top or that gorgeous brand new dress! Attempting to remove a stain in the wrong way can damage the fabric or make the stain worse. You may only get one chance to get it right, so we have been gathering tips on how to remove stains effectively for all the fashionistas out there!
Don't waste time
If you are able to treat a stain immediately it will be far easier to remove, so don't waste time and avoid machine drying and ironing until you have removed the stain successfully. The same applies with dry clean only products: take it to the cleaners as soon as possible and the stain will be easier to tackle. Also, please leave dry cleaning to the experts; the solvents used in the process can be very dangerous if used in the wrong way. Never mix stain removal products as they may release toxic gases when combined.
Test products safely
If you are using a stain-removing product be sure to test it in a discreet area of your item first. Try applying it, according to the instructions, to the inside hem - or somewhere that any mishap will not be visible. When you are confident that the product is suitable for your garment and is not causing any discolouration then you can go ahead and treat the visible stain.
Bleach
Do not use bleach for spot stain removal. If you feel that dilute bleaching of the entire garment is your only option be sure to check the label carefully for care details and follow the instructions on any bleaching agent to the letter.
Aftercare
Wash stain treated items thoroughly to remove residue.
Removing stubborn stains:
Red wine - flush with carbonated/soda water and wash.
Rust - flush with lemon juice, leave for 15 minutes and wash.
Blood - soak in heavily salted water or biological detergent and wash.
Ballpoint pen ink - apply methylated spirits to an absorbent white cloth and dab the stain.
Tea and coffee - flush with cold water, spot clean with detergent solution, soak in vinegar and wash.
Fat - add a small amount of water to some bicarbonate of soda until it forms a paste then spread over the stain. Leave for 30 minutes then wash.
