A lot of people are looking for ways to save money due to the down economy. It has been more and more fashionable for people to entertain in their homes rather than to go out to the movies, a fancy restaurant or a club. Enjoying time at home by hosting get-togethers, parties, or even just simple movie nights, in a dedicated entertainment area has become more popular, not to mention more budget friendly. For people with a den, entertaining visitors is easier, as this area can easily be converted into an activity venue. Unlike most rooms, this is an area where the personal style of the homeowner can come across without looking tacky or tasteless. Unfortunately, not every house has a large den, and the challenge lies in making smaller dens appear bigger in both appearance and style. In decorating a small den, one must choose furnishings of an appropriate scale. Items that are huge will only decrease the available space left for people to move around comfortably. At the same time, one doesn’t want to choose items that are too small and look as if they’re made for children. Moreover, one important thing to do when decorating a small space is to be particular about the items used to furnish your den. Having too many pieces in a small space will only make the space look messy and cluttered. Carefully selected pieces will make sure that the available space is maximized while ensuring the area is properly furnished.Mirrored furniture is a good trick to use when choosing furniture pieces for small areas. In a den, rustic tables with glass tops, bar shelves with glass walls and anything with reflective or transparent surfaces would be a great idea. Not only will these items give an illusion of a bigger space, it will also make the den appear more open.Color also plays an important role in making any room in the house appear bigger or smaller. The use of lighter colors would make a den appear more spacious, while dark color can make the space look smaller. The color of the walls will play a huge part in the overall feel of the den’s spaciousness, so cool colors like sky blue or yellow should do the trick of “opening up” the space. Another way to create an illusion of space is to place big pieces, like a corner entertainment center, at the farthest point from the entrance. Since these pieces are usually attention grabbers, a guest would view the large piece of furniture at the far end of the room as the focal point of the room. Since it is located at the far end of the room, the guest will perceive that there is more space between the entrance and the large piece of furniture. Having the entertainment center in the far corner also allows the remaining space to be used as the homeowner sees fit. The den can be decorated traditionally with sofas, end tables and coffee tables or with a more contemporary feel that includes chairs and game furniture. However you choose to decorate your den, making it suit your personal tastes helps to make it your own.
