A marriage ceremony in the foreign land is often a cause of worry when it comes to legal requirements that must be met for the wedding ceremony to become a valid one. Often couples have several questions and doubts when it comes to the legal formalities. If yours is going to be a beach wedding destination, make sure that you are aware of the marriage registration laws and other paper work that is involved, in advance.
Most of islands have their own set of rules to follow. You may either hire a local wedding planner or an agency or you may contact the island's tourism board to help you with the red tape matters.
Residency requirement and Issue of Marriage Registration LicenseApart from the Bahamas the residency requirement for US citizens for majority of the islands is not essential. When it comes to issue of marriage registrations license, Canada can involve a gestation period between the wedding ceremony and the issue of the marriage license. In some places like the Bermudas, it involves the payment of a demand draft at the office, while in Hawaii, personal presence of both the bride and the groom is necessary for the marriage registration license process. Some places, again like Bermudas, also require the formality of a 'Notice of intended marriage' to be filed minimum 2-3 weeks in advance before the date of the ceremony. The Bahamas legally insist on the personal presence of the couple for the registration process. Puerto Rico perseveres on the presence of two witnesses over the age of 21, with blood test reports, although a test conducted in the U.S. mainland within 10 days of the ceremony can also suffice. A licensed doctor in Puerto Rico must necessarily sign the license. Submission of legal documents
Most of the islands will require and can meet your requirements on submission of copies of your valid passport, driver's license, certified copies of birth certificates as well as proof of divorce or a death certificate of the spouse, where any of the parties has been involved in previous matrimony. A beach wedding ceremony at Barbados will also involve the letter from an authorized official performing the marriage ceremony. The Bahamas and the Cayman islands will also check for the proof of entry into the island as well as the return tickets back to your destination. You will also be required to swear in at American Embassy in Nassau compiling with Bahamas' regulations. Puerto Rice often asks for a health certificate from a resident licensed doctor. The U.S. Virgin Island will request a letter accompanying application for marriage stating the date of visit, duration of stay, and the chosen wedding date if having ceremony performed by a judge.Apart from the above, other legal necessities that must be enquired into for your beach wedding ceremony are - 1.Are you allowed to use the beach for your wedding?
2.Are you allowed to decorate and erect any large tents?
3.Are eatables and drinks allowed?
4.Can music be played late at night?
5.Is your country or outside the island professionals allowed to work at the wedding ceremony or whether they require a work permit? (E.g. A photographer or a catering service provider)Along with these, it is essential that you know of the charges that you may be asked to pay for other and above mentioned legal formalities. Most of the legal requirements at the islands are easy to take care of and do not ask for a long period of running around. If taken care of in advance, your beach wedding ceremony can be made legally valid with lots of fun and frolic!
