WHAT IS YOUR PURPOSE? Many people would approach the idea from a religious perspective, however, that is not my intent though the tone may seem religious or spiritual. I can say for certain that, regardless of our religion (or lack thereof for that matter), we all have purpose. Who am I? Why am I here? These are questions that reflect the soul's cry out for deeper meaning and connection. We all have a reason for being here. I assert that part of your reason for being here lies in the pursuit of purpose...or as a wise man once put it, "Your work is to discover your work and then with all your heart to give yourself to it."I believe that we're all endowed by God (The Creator, Mother Nature, Source, or however you refer to the supreme entity) with certain talents and abilities. We're all very much alike, but our personalities and character give us our individuality. There seems to be something special and intentional about our talents and gifts. Well, our talents and gifts are just that...they are gifts. These gifts are endowments from the Creator to be used in the living of life. It has been said that life is for the living, and I agree. This point may seem to have no perspective until you find yourself at a crossroads or a dilemma and you ask yourself what your purpose is. Then you will begin to assess the way you have lived your life and the things you have valued, given priority to or made important and whether or not you have been living your life.Even when we're not sure of our purpose or how to find it, we can believe by default that our talents and gifts are a part of that purpose. Because we all are who and what we are, our purposes may be a little different but that's okay. We weren't all made to think, act, and be the same. This is important because many of us today, are unable to be happy or find any fulfillment in life because we have fallen victim to the "cookie cutter" syndrome. Instead of listening to our hearts and our intuition, we would prefer to fit ourselves to the cookie cutter of someone else's design. We would still do that even to our own detriment. Corporations are full of these individuals. Not that I am saying anything is wrong with working in corporate environments or you can't be happy doing so. It's just that, for many of us these pursuits lack substance.I can speak personally and say that living a life of purpose leads to inner peace, happiness, and fulfillment. The path may be rough and bumpy, but connecting to your true purpose can be one of the most worthy pursuits you engage in. In a commencement speech to a Stanford University graduating class, Steve Jobs (CEO of Apple Computer and Pixar Animation) advised the class not to waste time living someone else's life, don't get trapped by someone else's thinking, don't let the noise of others' opinion drown out your inner voice and above all, have the courage to follow your heart and intuition. In essence, he admonished the class to live their lives on purpose. Many of us have resigned to living lives of mediocrity. We have no idea where we're going and how we will get there. We have become complacent in accepting direction from others. Our existences seem to be chocked full of emptiness as we go through the motions. Still all is not lost. See, when we connect to our purpose and start living our life on purpose, we increasingly connect to a higher calling. Innately, we all sense that there is a reason for our existence. When we connect to it, we give ourselves the right to become free of fear, worry and doubt. We can face our challenges knowing that, through it all, we are connected to something greater than our circumstances. We can give ourselves to something totally and feel fulfilled and nourished by it. We can live beyond our bounds. As my grandmother said, "...we are all here to do something." So now I ask you, are you living your life on purpose?By Rasheid Edwards
