The first week of 2010 has come and gone and it has been a good week for handicapping. But just because it was a good week, it doesn't mean that the next week of horse racing bets will also be profitable. The challenge in making money betting on horse races is that you are only as good as your last bet. While we have to look at the big picture and not let any one bet upset us, it is challenging to keep focused and to keep making good bets. When you are playing horse races for a living, you can't relax or get sloppy. Handicapping horse races has been compared to chess and other intellectual sports. While it may be an intellectual sport, it reminds me of marathon running. Mental discipline and toughness is a big part of long distance running because toward the end of the race, runners feel tremendous physical pain. Knowing that the pain is coming and they will have to push themselves beyond the limits of pain requires great mental and emotional strength.Playing the horses and riding the roller coaster of wagering on races is a lot like that. During 2010 I know I will lose many photo finishes. I will see my horse get disqualified for bumping another in the stretch. There will be the occasional losing streak as well. All these painful events, plus the mental fatigue of handicapping race after race and making decisions about each one, will push me to my limits as well.Does this sound familiar? Then here are a few suggestions for 2010 to make it a good year for any horse player who takes the time to make these resolutions and stick with them.1. Though I may lose a tough race because of the incompetence of a rider, I will not hold a grudge or let it upset me so I can't think straight to make the next big decision.2. I will keep records of each bet and manage my money like an adult so that I have better chance of making a profit.3. Though it may seem like the universe is out to get me, I will not take losing personally or bad racing luck as a sign that life is out to get me. I know that time and chance, as they say, happens to everyone sooner or later.4. I will learn to quit when I am ahead and to set win and loss limits.5. I will remember that horse racing handicapping is just part of my life and world and that there are people and other situations in life that are important to me.You can probably think of some other resolutions to make life more enjoyable and less stressful as well as improving your horse racing handicapping. Enjoy your days at the races in 2010.
