All major projects are managed by a project management software tool these days. The choices of the best package to use can be confusing. As with all such decisions, you need to start at the end. This means look at what outcome you need. First check and see if there is a project management software package that is specifically designed for your industry. These packages usually are developed by or with knowledgeable people in the industry and are customized for the particular unique needs of your industry. If there are no custom solutions, you will need to look at general purpose types of software. Start your research first with resources within your industry. Network with other professionals and find out what they are using. See also if they have tried anything other than their current software. Find out what they liked and didn't like.Your industries trade publications may also be a good source of feedback or recommendations. Post a question on forums for your industry.Once you have a list of possibilities, start the narrowing down process. See what is within your budget. See what kind of customization is available. Look for what training and support services are.Often the learning curve may be steep, so changing packages is not feasible, plus it is unlikely you can get a refund. You may however, be able to get a demo to get a feel of the capabilities. Does it have the features you need such as the ability to build PERT charts, or Gantt charts to map out the project?
