One of the best ways to learn more about wine is to actually visit wine regions and if possible speak to the wine makers and producers about their grapes. Not only do you get to immerse yourself in the region you visit by experiencing the climate firsthand, seeing the soil and being able to touch the grapes but you also get to walk through the vineyards, visit the local towns and eat and drink the wine form the region. You will come to discover there is something very special and unique about the people who devote a good majority of their lives to making wine. Do not let your limited or nonexistent ability to speak the local language keep you from visiting the wine regions because nowadays English is nearly the universal language of the world and most wine makers have adapted to it. Not to mention a smile and a hand shake go a long way in communicating.Usually whenever you plan to visit a winery you need to call or write to make an appointment. During your visit you can take a tour of the vineyards and the winery itself, talk to the producer, ask lot's of questions, sample lot's of wines and at the end of it buy some bottles to take with you. Most of the time you cannot get some of the wines back home so this is a good way to get them. Many of the larger wineries have tasting rooms and tours that will fill you with a wealth of knowledge about the local wines. There may be small fees for tasting but generally they are free. Lastly you will often be able to leave with other type of merchandise such as t-shirts or sweatshirts with the logo of the winery printed on them which is a fun addition to the wines you will be taking with you.Regardless of where you go to visit a vineyard you will leave with a better understanding of why these specific regions produce the grapes they do.
