Bipolar depression is the term used to refer to the disorder characterized by major swings in a person's mood. At one moment he may feel elated and confident, and shortly afterward the feeling abruptly changes to one of defeat and failure. The experience is similar to those occasions when one's feelings of well-being and happiness turn sour at a sudden turn of events or circumstances. The difference is that in bipolar depression, these mood swings occur regularly, sometimes even occurring daily, and without any rhyme, reason or regard to circumstance. The high points as well as the low points during the mood swings in bipolar depression do approach the extreme ends of the mood spectrum and can often lead to irrational behaviour. People diagnosed correctly with bipolar depression often experience euphoric highs and may actually believe they are incapable of defeat or injury. There may be occasions when bipolar persons gamble uncontrollably or decide to go on a shopping spree without any regard for their financial state or the probability of dire consequences that may follow. As the euphoria swings swiftly to a severely depressed state, the memory of a just-ended and short-lived euphoria haunts him and intensifies the depression even more. While such extreme examples are not generally common, lesser degrees of euphoria and sudden depression occurring regularly in an alternating fashion can still be quite confusing and definitely exhausting. There are an endless array of possibilities towards a path of difficulties in the personal and family life.A person suffering from bipolar depression in the workplace may bring potentially harmful consequences. Decisions made rashly during a period of extreme highs may very well result in serious damages to the company or his co-workers. It is observed that once a person is diagnosed with this ailment due to drug abuse, it is common that patients have to deal with it through the rest of his life.Once a valid and proper diagnosis of bipolar depression is made, a person will have to manage the condition for rest of his life. Children sometimes do develop bipolar depression but the condition is often misdiagnosed as attention deficit hyperactivity disorder (ADHD) or even simple hyperactivity. While the disorder is a complex medical issue, the present treatment for bipolar depression generally does help those who suffer from it. After medical attention, their lives get back to normal. The regimen of treatment normally requires medication to reduce the severity of the moods, and some form of psychotherapy to inform the person suffering from bipolar depression of the manifestations of the disorder and instruct him how to recognize its onset.
