Realize this, you don't have to be good to start, you have to start to be good. So don't worry about limitation in skills....you will acquire it as you go along.I never see myself as having limiting skills even though I do have limited formal education, so no worries in that area.I do not know how much you like been a businessman/woman. But I believe that working on your strength is the key to your success.Recently, I have found that the fundamental of business success is marketing. Without that, business will never flourish, thus I have taken the time and effort to concentrate in my marketing skills. So my recommendation is, start studying and applying (this is important, applying) skills and techniques you learn on the job and on your part time business....2nd, If you can, do your business part time, know more people in your area or industry. If you sell crafts, find out more about arts and crafts industry players etc. The 2nd most important fundamental for success is 'The people you are with'. Critically important.3rd, here is what I recommend if you have do not know what industry you want to be in. See yourself 5 yrs from now. What are you doing? Who are you doing with? What products are you selling? Be as specific as possible. Don't just say 'I want to do business' , you must know what kind of business and why you want to do it.Then backtrack and plan your way there. For example for me, 5 yrs from now I want to be a public speaker in the area of personal development and inspiration. 10 yrs from now, I want to run a educational company doing this and that and that......Then I would think....how to get from here to there? What experience do I need? What business should I join to get the skills? who should I know? What association can I join to bring me there? (Joining Toastmasters wasn't an accident, it was planned)Then from there you have an idea of what industry can you join. Se, most people's biggest problem is not lack of capability, its lack of motivation to think things through. Henry Ford say it well when he said "thinking is the hardest job in the world"Spent a day and think things through, think about what you really want, write it down, draft a plan .Don't worry about the future because you can always add or remove stuff in your plan as your life goes along. But without the plan, the blueprint, you get nowhere, simple as that.Rod Low is the founder of Expedite Drop, an advertising network company that focus on niche blog advertising.
