You have decided to start a wine collection and everyone keeps telling you that you need a storage unit, however you not exactly sure why you need one. A beginner's collection tends to be small and it can probably fit nicely in your pantry. Why spend the extra money on a storage unit? Well if you are serious about collecting, a storage unit is a must have. Even if you are not serious about collecting, if you want your wine to taste its best, you must have a unit to storage. The main reason that a storage unit is essential is due to how the vino ages. After it is bottled the aging processes begins. If it is not stored properly it will speed up the aging and can affect not only the color and smell but also the taste. I can not begin to tell you how disappointing it is to keep a bottle for years, spend time and money, only to open it and have it taste quite different than you expected. It can also be a bit embarrassing if you have guests. Now that you know why you have to store wine, you may be wondering exactly how to store it. In a perfect world we would all have incredible cellars that stay at the precise temperature year round. However, for most of us, a cellar is a luxury we can not afford. Don't worry. We still have options. Proper storage is not a difficult task. With a little preparation you can have that perfectly aged bottle every time. First buy a bottle rack a little larger than you think you need. This is for one reason and one reason only, your collection will grow. While you probably can not keep the bottles at a constant temperature, you need to at least keep it in a cool dark place. Light is the enemy of wine and can age it unbelievably fast. So try to find a place in your home that is dark and cool, a spare closet or basement work best. I don't suggest a pantry because with people constantly frequenting it, it can get more light exposure than you may realize. When choosing a wine rack, try to purchase something that is both aesthetically pleasing and functional. You will spend a lot of time and money choosing each bottle. That same dedication should go into where and how you store it.My name is Kris Dugan and I love wine. My father used to have a big wine cellar and once a year we went to the wineries and helped with the creation of wine. Today beside drinking wine and owning an amazing home wine cellar i also write for my favorite wine site Wine of Wisdom
