I am a runner. I love running. I love the fact that it is something that I do by myself for myself. There are many different reasons why people run. They are as varies as to lose weight, to relieve stress and of course there are always the athletes who run for a living. Most of us run because we feel better after a run then before. If you have been thinking about running and want to get started, here are a couple of tips to get you started.First, go to your doctor and get checked out. Make sure you tell them that you are going to be starting a running program and would like the all clear to get started. Second, decide why you want to get started. Define a goal. Do you want to lose weight? Do you want to improve your fitness? Do you want to relieve stress? Write it down.Third, assess your current fitness level. Have you been sitting on the couch the last few months? Are you a walker who wants to start running? Do you bike? How many days a week do you currently work out? If you are a true beginner, meaning your current activity level is zero, you will want to start very slowly. If you go too quickly, you will burn out and not want to continue. Remember, you will be sore!Fourth, make sure you have the proper shoes. I recommend going to a running specialty store and having them fit you for the proper type. It can mean the difference between enjoying your runs and dreading them. After you start running/jogging, I recommend working out at least 3 times per week. Keep going for at least 3 weeks. It usually takes that long to develop a habit. Soon you will find yourself looking forward to those runs and how great you know you will feel after! Don't try to run 3 miles your first time out. Many people have had a lot of success wit the run/walk formula. Run for maybe 2 minutes, them walk for 1 minute. As you progress with your running program, make the running intervals longer.Almost anyone can run and be successful with a running program.Jennie Crawford is the stay at home mom with two young children.
