Just What Is Unschooling?

Unschooling is a flexible method of learning that is not restricted by a specific learning plan, learning schedule, or learning location. It is hard to define, as it's meaning tends to be different from one person to the next. In spite of the different interpretations, a large number of families that homeschool consider it the preferred teaching method.Unschooling is a natural learning process that is more in touch with day-to-day life experiences. Not at all what most of us are used to, having no traditional curriculum and not using traditional teaching methods. In fact, scheduled classes, predetermined subjects, and textbooks, as we know them, are of little importance.Think back to your own school days, do you remember being stimulated, or bored by your learning? Were you having fun learning? It has been proven that both children and adults respond to learning in a more positive fashion when it is being done in an enjoyable manner that includes having fun.Is unschooling an exact science? Not even close. However, this is one of the reasons it is so appealing to many parents who have decided to home school their children. Their children love having the opportunity to learn things they would not even have been exposed to in the traditional classroom, but are a part of everyday life.Here's an example of the flexibility of unschooling; you may have a ten year old who has shown a strong interest for astronomy or genealogy. In a conventional school setting these interests would not be addressed with any detail until college.Unschooling, as a method of teaching, has few rules. There are no predetermined boundaries that can restrict a child's learning experience. You may find yourself both surprised and impressed with the amount of available information.Many homeschool groups and online discussion forums are populated by families who successfully employ unschooling methods.
