Connemara is an excellent area in which to holiday, with plenty of opportunities for walking, cycling, fishing and all kinds of activities; as well as being the perfect place to experience the warmth of Irish hospitality.
The 2,957 hectares Connemara National Park is the perfect place to experience this varied landscape. The visitor centre near Letterfrack provides a good starting with walks of varying lengths and difficulties. You can climb up Diamond Hill from here following the ridge of the mountains and at the summit you will be rewarded by stunning panoramic views encompassing The Twelve Bens and the beautiful islands of Inisbofin and Inisturk.
A walking route for the more adventurous is the Glencoaghan Horseshoe taking you round the south of The Twelve Bens which dominate the centre of Connemara, and taking in their highest peak.
Cycling is another great way to experience the scenery. The roads are quiet and tend to go around the mountains, rather than over, them providing routes which are not to difficult for the average cyclist, but if you do want something a bit more challenging there is the Derroura Mountain Bike Trail Network providing the thrills of ascent and descent whilst enjoying the scenery.
Kylemore Abbey, home to Benedictine nuns, is one of the gems of the area. The 6 acre Victorian walled garden and the Gothic church described as a 'cathedral in miniature' are well worth giving time to if you visit this former gothic castle in its picturesque setting at the bottom of heavily wooded slopes by the still waters of Kylemore Lake.
There are numerous pretty little villages to visit. Leenaun at the head of Killary Harbour, Ireland's only fjord, is just one worth mentioning. Clifden, Connemara's capital, is a bustling town that makes an excellent place for a bit of souvenir shopping and a good place to eat, with its growing reputation as the 'Gourmet Capital' of the west of Ireland.
Irish music is to be found most nights in the villages of Connemara. The village of Letterfrack is famous for impromptu gatherings of local players, as well as two organised music festivals, held in May and October.
