It is a good idea to use the title of the song as a basis upon which to build. The title is the thing that everyone will remember, it is the attention grabber. Begin by looking around for good titles, something that will evoke strong emotions in yourself, and therefore also in your audience.

Try to set a regular time slot for your songwriting every day, if you do not have anything specific as a topic, just write anything that comes to mind. Listen to other songs regularly to stimulate new thoughts and ideas, you may come across some new avenues you would perhaps like to explore. Here are a few guidelines that many songs follow, these are not hard and fast rules but may help you out a little.

* Include the title in the chorus.
* The chorus should be the punchline of the song, as in the main point of the story
* The verses should tell the story of the song, maybe telling the background and what has happened to bring the story to its conclusion. There are usually 2 or 3 verses, so you can split the story up into these sections.
* Try not to repeat the same word more than twice in a verse or chorus, especially if they are words used to form the rhyming element of the song.
* If it happens that the music does not fit well with the lyrics, alter the lyrics and not the music.

Learning the art of songwriting is a process that you must keep practicing in order for your writing to improve. So keep your songwriting head on at all times and be aware of everything that is going on around you. Keep up to date with what is happening in the world, what is in the news, what is everybody talking about and concerned about at the moment? Try and pick up the mood and emotion and use this as the inspiration for your next song. Finally, always make sure you have a notebook with you, you don't want to miss a thing. Now that sounds like a familiar song!
