Oddly enough, many people suffer with diabetes complications long before they are diagnosed with this particular disease. As may be expected, if you do not get your blood sugar levels checked at least once a year, you may miss out an on opportunity to get control of this disease. Unfortunately, the longer you wait to get treatment for diabetes, the more you will suffer with diabetes complications. Today, there are at least three complications that should prompt you to see your doctor as soon as possible.

Nerve Damage

When your blood sugar levels are too high, it will cause damage to the protective tissue that surrounds each nerve cell. Picture what an electric wire looks like after a mouse chews it. This is something like what your nerve cells will be like after exposure to high levels of glucose. Under these circumstances, you may feel stinging sensations or sharp pains. Some diabetics also have digestion and heart problems related to this type of nerve damage. Even though they may go away after a few seconds, you should never ignore them. When you go to see your doctor, you should ask for a Hemo A1C test as well as a routine fasting blood sugar test. The Hemo A1C test will reveal if your blood sugar is high on average.

Kidney Damage

Oddly enough, the early stages of kidney damage tend to be marked by increased urination levels. If you eat a lot of carbohydrates, you may notice that you urinate more often. This happens because your body is trying to get rid of the excess sugar as quickly as possible. Your kidneys will attempt to filter it out through the urine as part of that process. At the very least, you should see if your bladder habits change when you eat fewer fast acting carbohydrates. If you notice a reduction, then you should report this matter to your doctor. Depending on your situation, it may still be early enough in the disease process for you to save your kidneys from further damage. In some cases, you may only need to make a few changes in your diet to solve the problem.

Eye Damage

There is no question that visual changes come with a number of diseases. That said, diabetes can lead to retinal neuropathy, as well as several other problem. In some cases, your eye doctor may be alerted to the fact that you have diabetes long before your primary care doctor. It cannot be emphasized enough that you should have both fasting blood sugar and Hemo A1C exams at least once a year.

In many cases, the complications associated with diabetes are often thought of as symptoms of other diseases. Fortunately, a simple blood test will reveal whether or not diabetes is the primary disease. Even though these complications may be present for many years, it is very important for you to get treatment for diabetes as quickly as possible. No matter how you look at it, diabetes is a controllable disease, and one that you do not need to die from.
