Workouts to Get Ready for Your Season

I don't know about you, but I am about a month away from my season tryout for high school, and it's about time to begin conditioning. As we all know soccer requires a great amount of running and fitness, so I will outline several things you can do to get ready.

1. Plyometrics - These jumping exercises work on building strength in various muscles and help improve your take off speed. Plyometrics can be dangerous if not used properly, so if not comfortable, always have someone watching you. There are plenty of sites on google which outline many exercises to get you going!

2. Speed work 1 - There are several different speed workouts, some include changing direction swiftly, others are just 100 meter dashes. Use several cones spread apart 10-15 yards, and sprint to each either backpedaling, doing side-to-sides, or straight sprinting.

3. 10/20 Speed Work - I'm not certain what these are called so I just gave them a name myself :) These work great to improve burst speed in opposite direction. Set 3 cones up, or any objects for that matter, one at 0 yard marker, one at 10, and one 20 yards from the 10, so the 30 yard mark. Backpedal from the 0 to the 10 and as quickly as you can, turn around and sprint to the 30.

4. Long distance - Soccer not only involves sprinting but also being able to stay in the game for 90 minutes, meaning longevity. Simple runs of 3-6 miles every 2-3 days will do wonders for your physical shape in game. Time limit is not really an issue, since we aren't running Cross Country, but being able to run the distance without stopping is mandatory. Try to start at 3 if you aren't there already, and build your mileage up every a week.

5. Don't forget to keep your ball work up as well, easily incorporate running with the ball by going to a field and dribbling it for however long you think is right. If you feel your sprint work is up to notch, incorporate sprinting with the ball, you can never be too good at that.
