On an Alaska cruise, you're in for a treat. It's not all snow-capped mountains and mirror-like bodies of water. There's something for everyone, even those who love their travel "adventure-packed."

Juneau

Accessible only by air or water, this picturesque town is full of things to see and do, and in the summer months, the long daylight hours mean you can get around easily and safely. Take a helicopter tour of the glaciers, visit the Alaska State Museum, browse through dozens of interesting shops, art galleries and businesses. Pan for gold, embark on a guided historical walking tour of the town or for the more energetic, enjoy a rain forest walk of discovery.

Ketchikan

Dubbed the "Salmon Capital of the World", Ketchikan is Alaska's first city. Catch the Great Alaskan Lumberjack Show or explore Saxman Native Village. Native art is evident everywhere in the beautifully painted totems and in the delightful arts and crafts available in the little stores that line the docks. You can even buy locally caught, smoked and canned salmon here. Now that's fish from the source!

Glacier viewings

No trip to Alaska is complete without glorious glacier viewings. Obviously, shore excursions are not offered due to the unstable nature of the constantly moving ice but you will certainly feel the rumble and hear the thunderous roar as a nearby glacier splits and dumps an oversized ice cube into the sea! The pristine splendor of virgin ice and snow is not to be missed.

Wrangell

This is one of the newer ports of call on an Alaska cruise and is the perfect place for keen anglers or bear watchers. Thrilling wildlife excursions will give you a front row seat as you explore Mother Nature at her freshest! You'll also find Southeast Alaska's only USGA-rated golf courses here so if you're yearning for a round of golf, don't miss it.

Prince Rupert

North America's deepest port, Prince Rupert on British Columbia's north coast is a gateway for many an Alaska cruise. See the intriguing Haida and Tsimpsean Indian totems up close and immerse yourself in the richly historical native culture. Prince Rupert is where you'll find beaches of clean, white sand plus waterfalls, hot springs, mountains and rain forest. Grizzly bears can be viewed at Canada's only sanctuary.

Hubbard Glacier

Dubbed the "Galloping Glacier" for its rapidly shifting geography, Hubbard is the biggest tidewater glacier in North America. On average, it moves at around five and a half feet per hour, which, in glacier terms, is breakneck speed. At its highest peak, it soars to 40 stories high, making you feel like an insignificant speck on your ship's deck. At six miles wide, you can't even take it in at a single glance. Glide past and try to capture Hubbard in all its glory on film.

There are more points of interest and shore stops on an Alaska cruise, some of which are not mentioned here so grab some reading material and find out what would appeal to you. Of course, not all itineraries will include all of the above ports of call so be sure to pick one that will take you to as much as possible that's of interest to you.
