Traditionally, teaching and learning has been conducted in a classroom setting. You had to be in your seat at a scheduled time on a scheduled day. You had to have your homework or other assignment completed by the next class. Having a scheduled class might not always fit into the schedule for a busy mom or a busy professional or a busy entrepreneur. But did you know that many of the classes you would have needed to go to a campus to take are now available online? Let’s talk about the benefits of taking an online class and how it may be right for you. There are two types of online classes: synchronous and asynchronous. Synchronous classes are very similar to going to a traditional instructor-led class. You will still need to meet up at a scheduled time, but the benefit is that you don’t have to leave the comfort of your home. You simply log in to your class on your computer and participate. Most likely your instructor will have a presentation or lecture prepared and you will need to have the proper software installed on your computer to view it. Many times you will be able to collaborate with your classmates through online chat or forums.Asynchronous classes allow you to study on your own time. This means if you are ready to work on your course materials at 2 A.M., then you have the flexibility to do so! You just read through your course materials and then submit your assignments as required. Most communication between you and your instructor and classmates is done through email or through some type of learning management system, if available. In both cases, think about the convenience of not having to drive to a campus. You will save money on gas and parking fees. You will not have fight through traffic or risk your safety being out on a dark campus at night. If this sounds good to you, take an hour or so and research online options for adults and see if it could be a great way for you to expand your skills or even work on a new degree! You will find that you can complete your college degree online or just take a few courses to brush up on your skills for your job. If you don't have any specific educational requirements, you might want to try learning something new that you've always had to put off because you didn't have time. Online learning is a great method to get the knowledge you need.
