Well, it's that time of year again. Time to prepare for the police oral board interview. If you bombed the oral exam the first go round, or you're taking it for the very first time this year the key to success is preparation. It can be a little nerve-racking, but with proper preparation, you should do well. The oral interview along with the written entrance exam is responsible for eliminating more police applicants than any other portion of the recruiting process. Below are some great tips that will help you prepare for the police interview process.Job Interview Tip #1: Research the departmentI'm always amazed when a potential candidate don't even know the first and last name of the Chief of police or the departments' mission statement. To put it simple, do your homework before the interview, and know the department like the back of your hand. There shouldn't be any excuse to why you don't know the Chief's name.Job Interview Tip #2: Eye ContactYou must maintain eye contact with the interviewers. Whenever he/she is asking you a questions, make sure that your eyes are focused on that particular person. This sends a non-verbal cue that you are interested.Job Interview Tip #3: Prepare your responsesPrepare a response to common questions like "why do you want to become a police officer?" or "what is your biggest weakness/strengths?." Know the interviewers name and title. If Captain Brown ask you a question, reply with his rank first, and then his name. If you are not sure of the name of the raters on the panel, call and ask prior to your interview.
