"Moving day and we are going to our new home"! This is a source of excitement, and sometimes anxiety among children. Many times there is a feeling of loss. They have had to say goodbye to many of their old friends, and will have to make new friends. They may be changing schools. They are not sure if they will be accepted into the new neighborhood. There are a million thoughts that go through a child's mind at a time like this. Their emotions are running wild. They have so many concerns that they have to deal with. It is times like this that they need our support and understanding most. So far in the life of a child, this may the biggest day in his/her life. Change can bring about so many doubts and concerns. Children sometimes get the feeling of being almost lost. It is hard for them to know what to expect and just how to adjust. It is amazing to watch them go through this process. They are resourceful and resilient. Most kids have the ability to make new friends in a short period of time. Then, they discover new things about their new home that their parents didn't even know. Pretty soon they are feeling better about the whole situation. They are quick to gain information about the neighborhood from the new kids that they now call friends. Usually within days or weeks they have a grip on the whole situation. Now the excitement focuses on their new friends and their new school, and sometimes their own room. Moving can be fun, especially if they get to help pick out their own bedding, and bedding accessories.
It is important to allow children to have input in selecting things for their rooms. Depending on the age of the child, this can range from the color that the walls are painted, to the pictures on the walls. For sure one of the most important items in their room is their bed. It is a good idea to let them help (with the parents' guidance of course) in choosing the theme of their own room. Picking out the sheets and comforter for their beds gives the child joy. Watch them delight in the choices they make. The anticipation of waiting for packages to arrive in the mail, with their name on them gives them something to look forward to. This gives them a feeling of belonging. It says that they are important and have some say in their lives. They are beginning to make some decisions that impact their own lives. This can be a great confidence builder. One of the most comforting and reassuring things that a child can experience is to help decorating their very own room, full of things that belong to them. This has a profound impact on the adjustments they must make. By having their own space, it gives them a place to think out their problems. Part of having their own space is the input that they have had in decorating that room. This is a tremendous confidence builder in the life of a child. It says they belong and they are important. Today we have many advantages over our parents of just a few years ago. We have the internet. The internet is a great place to shop for kids bedding and bedding accessories. Take advantage of the internet, it is truly a wonderful place to shop. Kids love computers, and here they can see the things they want for their rooms, in a few days the packages come (with their name on it) and it contains the very things they picked out with their parents on the computer.
