For the longest time I thought that the process of building muscles was a nice long workout. I'd get off work and head to the gym. I'd stay there for a good two hours. I was sore and exhausted, so I naturally assumed that I was doing the right thing to put on muscle. Well, I was wrong. There is one important part of the human anatomy that I missed on; testosterone. Testosterone is the hormone that really helps us guys put on muscle. The problem is that when we start working out our testosterone drops. Basically after 60 minutes, you're out of testosterone and you're just waisting at the gym. The only way to raise these levels is through sleep, which isn't really a solution in the middle of the workout.I typically worked out "slow". I was trying to maximize my weight lifting, so I'd take extra time resting between sets. A lot of people would break for 60 seconds and I would go for 2-3 minutes. When you take that time through an entire workout, you're going to run very long. I never really broke a sweat because it wasn't that intense. The process of building muscles go back to a simple philosophy called Darwinism. His idea was based on animals in an ecosystem, but it still applies for muscles. To simplify it; in a changing environment an animal must adapt or die. This is the whole point of weight lifting. You're changing your environment and forcing your muscles to adapt or die. When you workout for a shorter period of time, but with extreme intensity, you're creating a very tough environment for your muscles. This means they have to major adapting to handle. It adapts by creating more muscle fiber, so it can handle the intensity. That's all you need to do. It doesn't matter how long you workout for, it's how intense you do it.If you're interested in learning about doing intense workouts, than you should check out the 7 Minute Muscle.
