Kindness is a Gift to Yourself

The Merriam Webster dictionary gives us the first definition of "kind" as "nature" or "fundamental nature or quality". It is not until we read down into the next entire definition that we find "affectionate and loving".I find this very interesting because the idea of "being kind" does not resonate with me in a comfortable way. It seems pretentious and vague. I much prefer seeing the attributes of "kind" as our fundamental nature, an inherent quality. The colloquialism of "being kind" has come to mean that a person shows a good nature toward others; is, therefore, affectionate and loving. Yet, I question that. If I am affectionate and loving, then that is my nature. I am not necessarily being kind. I am being myself. When I am being myself, then I am my own "kind" and I will attract to me those who are of the same "kind" to me. Like attracts like. All we need to do is pay attention.I have a wonderful story that illustrates this point. Some years ago, my daughter and her husband came from Nevada to Washington to visit me. They wanted to spend some time in Vancouver, Canada so we planned a weekend there, also. During our trip, we decided to go to Gastown (old Vancouver) for dinner. When we got out of the car in the parking garage and entered the sidewalk on the street, there were numerous people around asking for money. My daughter was visibly effected since she lives in a very small town and does not experience this type of life very often. I opened myself within to those who were asking for money to allow myself to know if I wished to give them money or not. I got "no" each time, until one man, simply walking along the street looked at me and said, "Do you have any extra change?" Immediately I knew this was the person I was supposed to assist. I reached into my wallet and gave him a $20 bill much to the amazement of my daughter. The man threw his arms around me, hugging me close. We stood in that posture for some time and then he drew back and said, "Do you know that I have a job to start next week and an apartment that I am going to rent? I am staying at the Salvation Army right now and I needed exactly $20 to complete the rental agreement for the apartment. Do you know what you have done?"Was I being kind? No, I was being with my "kind", staying in the moment of attention and love and waiting for the nudge to tell me this is the moment. It is an inherent quality, a fundamental piece of who we are.Toni Elizabeth Sar'h Petrinovich, Ph.D. is a visionary, weaver of grace, quantum physicist and multidimensional traveler.
