Weight! It Might Be the Way You Think!

I know that at this time of the year many people are doing a life review. The New Year is traditionally a time to make resolutions to improve our lives in some way. We either determine to eat less, exercise more, get our finances in order or some other goal. But how come we lose the momentum so quickly after the first of January? Most people will have broken their resolutions by about 3 weeks into the year. I believe that this is because most people do not know why they want the 'new year's resolution' in the first place.

Let's just look at one thing. Losing weight. This is such a common one. Many people who say that they want to lose weight in the New Year are not aware of how they gained weight in the first place or why. Did they gain weight because they were feeling dissatisfied with their life? Or empty or wanted more sweetness in their life? I was watching a show the other night on TV and a woman made the comment that she kept eating, even when she was full, because she did not feel a sense of satisfaction. She was using food to fill a spiritual or emotional void.

Many now believe that food is simply a replacement for an emotional need within a person. If this is true, then perhaps a better new year's resolution would be to be okay with who we are. This can be achieved in many ways such as keeping a gratitude journal, success journal, creating a vision board, doing daily meditation and asking questions of yourself when you reach for food that is not healthy or in between mealtimes.

The questions can really simple such depending on the food you are thinking of eating.

For example

Something sweet - Where in my life would I like some sweetness and how can I achieve that without food?
Something spicy - Where in my life do I want more spice and how can I get that?
Overeating - Where in my life do I feel dissatisfied or empty?

Even the simple idea of asking the questions will shift your thinking from the eating to the emotion behind it. This will help you to become more aware of why you eat which in turn will translate into healthier choices. Why you eat could be more important than what you eat. So next time you go to reach for a piece of chocolate or some chips, ask yourself why you want them. What need are they filling in you?
