SEO or Search Engine Optimization is a tactic used by companies and advertisers to get a website at the top of search engine results pages. The beauty of this tactic is that the results are more sustainable than almost any other form of advertising. In other words once a website has attained a top position on a search engine for a given keyword, the website will remain there or there about for time to come. Could you imagine paying for a print ad in the star and after the campaign has finished your ad will remain there for months to come.

SE marketing is therefore the perfect strategy if you have a long term view of making profits going forward. Once all the hard work has been done, you can sit and enjoy the fruits of your effort from previous months. On the other hand, Search engine optimization may not always be the right strategy to adopt. There are many online marketing strategies that one needs to look into before embarking on a campaign. For instance if you are a company who is testing out a product or testing how online users will react to your offering, we would not necessarily recommend SEO.

SEO will allow a web site to climb up the rankings of a search engine. However, this takes time and does not happen overnight. As a marketer, you would not want to invest a sum of money in a strategy only to realise that your efforts were in vain. In other words even if your website is now on the top of Google for your chosen keyword, this may not bring you sustainable results.

Paid search is a strategy that could be used in this case as the results are immediate. As soon as the campaign goes live, your website ad will appear on the search engine in prominent positions. Once you understand how the online market reacts about your product online, you can then make a more informed decision about the way forward regarding other strategies such as SEO. For example paid search will allow you to very quickly identify which keywords perform the best and how well each word performed. Once you have a thorough understanding of the specific keyword set then you can apply search engine optimization of the best performing keywords.

In summary, when it comes to adopting any online strategy, a more holistic approach should be taken into account. There are plenty of channels to choose from, which is why it is important to first understand how the market reacts to your product online.
