This time of year may be pretty to some but its also very dangerous. Between snow and ice and the cold, you need to stay prepared and keep some items in your vehicle at all times, just in case.
Blankets and sleeping bags to keep warm. If you happen to get stuck in the snow, you cannot keep your vehicle running (exhaust fumes) so you will need blankets and sleeping bags to keep warm till help arrives.
Extra clothing like hats, gloves, scarves, boots, socks, overalls, etc. If you have to get out and dig out your vehicle you will probably need extra clothing to keep warm or if you get wet, to change into. So it may be a good idea to keep a regular pair if clothes in your vehicle as well.
Bottled water, lots of it! You can survive longer without food than you can water. Not only can these be used drinking if needed but they can provide extra weight you may need for traction.
Food items such as granola bars, crackers, things of that nature. Food that don't need preparation is best and food that doesn't spoil. You can also find MRE's (meals ready to eat, similar to what soldiers eat) online you can order.
Couple of small jar candles, a lighter and a large empty coffee can. If you light a candle inside of the coffee can it can produce just enough heat to keep you warm. This is only advised for last resort. Fire is dangerous but it can save your life if done correctly and supervised. Vans are perfect for this situation, they are larger and have enough open floor area to set the coffee can. Remember to crack a window for ventilation.
Small games to help children pass time or even a deck of cards for the big kids.
Extra medications if someone in your vehicle may need daily or unexpectedly. Inhaler, insulin, heart medication, blood pressure, etc. Keep these out of reach of children.
Of course, your cell phone. If calling 911 be sure to stay calm and pay attention to your surroundings if you are unfamiliar with the area. That way when you call 911, you can give them details of what you see.
Al tho getting stuck in the snow or any elements, don't panic, stay calm, use your head and think and help will arrive to help you. Keeping calm will help children stay calm as well.
