If you are under stress, you must get rid of it as soon as possible - period. Throughout my life I have been an overly anxious and stressful person. I experienced firsthand how after a while prolonged stress begins to ruin your life and leads to panic attacks.
In the first stage of stress, your brain receives an emergency signal - that's why stress starts physically. The cause of this signal can be a physical emergency position that urgently needs to be dealt with - such as a bear running towards you. Or it can be a mental trigger, such as before entering an exam. This stage is meant for your well-being, because your brain and all your organs will work faster and better to cope with the emergency situation.
If, however, for one reason or another you are unable to get out from that state, things get uglier. For example; maybe you had a monetary problem and you were thinking about it hard to solve it. Since your brain got that as an emergency situation, it put you under stress. But that problem is not something to be solved in a matter of hours - so you were exposed to prolonged stress - more strain than you were designed to handle. Now, as you couldn't overcome stress, the prolonged emergency period which consumes a lot of energy begins to drive you towards exhaustion. Your brain thinks you still need to fight - but your body can only cope with so much energy consumption. Your resistance starts being broken down, and you are unable to sleep because of your constant alertness.
And if that situation continues your energy is totally drained. You need to do things in order to continue your life but can't do so because you have no energy. This inability to continue breaks down all your remaining resistances and drains your will to live. This is also the stage where physical repercussions kick in: you now have a much greater tendency to high blood pressure and heart diseases.
Without a doubt everyone needs to overcome their anxiety and stress before it ruins life. As I said I was a chronic over-anxious person and I started having panic attacks as a result. But I was able to cure myself and got rid of stress in my life!
