Choosing good quality, ethically produced items has become easier over recent years, as companies have recognised that consumers like to buy things that they feel good about. The alpaca is one of a group of animals called South American camelids. Alpacas and llamas have both been domesticated over thousands of years for separate purposes, and their appearance reflects their roles. Although at first glance the similarity in appearance between alpacas and llamas is striking, so too is the difference in size. Llamas were bred as pack animals, and have been bred for size, strength and stamina, enabling them to carry heavy loads over long distances. Alpacas are quite a lot smaller, measuring about one metre at the withers and are primarily used for their amazing fleeces. The wool is becoming increasingly popular outside of the alpaca’s native land, as it has several advantages over fibres from fleeces such as sheep. The wool is very lightweight, but also considerably warmer than sheep wool, and is extremely soft to touch. Those who are sensitive or allergic to lanolin can wear alpaca products, and the fact it does not feel scratchy or irritating against the skin means that it is suitable for making baby clothing.

There are more than 22 natural colours of alpaca wool, ranging from white and tones of cream and beige, to deep browns and black. On a summer’s day it can seem as though winter is an eternity away, but chilly autumn days come around sooner than often imagined. Treating yourself to some warm accessories in the run up to colder weather means that you are prepared and can stay snug. An alpaca scarf is a great option, being light, stylish and exceptionally warm. There are styles of alpaca scarf to suit almost any taste available, and they are both stylish, practical and made from natural fibres.

There is an added sense of well being that comes from wearing good quality clothes.
