Anger in a Relationship - What is Its Purpose?

The Bible talks a lot about anger. In fact, I am amazed at how much the Bible does mention anger. Immediately when reading verses on anger, you can see that the Bible gives us definite commands about our anger.

Psalms 37:8 says "Cease from anger, and forsake wrath: fret not thyself in any wise to do evil."

Cease being angry. The Bible says to stop being angry.

I don't believe that the Bible tells us to do away with anger altogether. God gave us anger for a purpose. I believe that anger is a motivator telling us that something is not right. However, at the point that we are moved to do something about what is making us angry, we must turn off our anger.

Anger does not correct the problem. Ir is the motivation for us to correct the problem. Once we are motivated, it must be stopped.

Ecclesiastes 7:9 says "Be not hasty in thy spirit to be angry: for anger resteth in the bosom of fools."

One of the dangers of anger is having a short fuse or having an anger that is too easily set off. That is one of the major dangers of anger. This verse tells us not to get angry quickly. Don't get angry over something where anger is not needed or justifiable.

Anger causes people to act in bizarre ways. Why would someone pull out a gun and shoot a driver because that driver pulled out if front of them? Why do people get so vindictive over the smallest offense? Because they are too quick to get angry. They have become angry so quickly so many times before that they can no longer control their anger. Instead, their anger completely controls them.
