DHEA or dehydroapiandrosterone is an over-the-counter medicine used to improve blood vessel function and insulin sensitivity. It is also believed to benefit patients with adrenal deficiency. Another benefit being claimed by DHEA is the improvement of alertness and stamina. Thus, many athletes take DHEA supplements to improve their game.
DHEA effectiveness is still under question, but the fact that it is available over the counter. It is easily available to a wide range of people. Thus, understanding it is necessary.
Now, how DHEA connects with hair thinning.
Hair thinning may be due to the fact that DHEA converts to androgen testosterone and estrogen testosterone which may be converted to dihydrotestosterone or DHT. DHT is a common cause of male pattern baldness or hair loss. Therefore, with increased level of DHEA in the body, hair thinning will follow because of DHT.
The same effect in the libido may be linked to increased level of DHEA in the body. It is believed to increase sexual interest or libido; this may therefore be due to DHEA being a precursor to DHT.
Hair thinning and hair loss may be reversed if DHEA supplementation is stopped.
What are the side effects of DHEA?
Aside form DHEA causing hair thinning, below are some side effects that may be attributed to DHEA supplementation:
• Acne, may be due to hormonal imbalances
• Increased sweat odor
• Scalp itchiness which may be attributed to the hormonal imbalances causing decrease of nutrients entering the scalp
• Menstrual irregularity, because of the high level of male hormone in DHEA, women's menstrual cycle may be affected.
• Irritability and restlessness, this may be due to irregularities in the immune level of ones individual.
What are beneficial claims of DHEA?
• Supplement for the treatment of Alzheimer's disease. This however is disputed by FDA and studies only claim to see side effects rather than benefits.
• Mood and depression relieve, this is a result of a small randomized study. However, a larger randomized study showed no beneficial effect of DHEA to elderly men and women.
• Lower risk of death or cardiovascular disease. This is still under dispute because in a recent study, it is found that there is no direct correlation between DHEA and the risk of cardiovascular disease.
The only significant effect of DHEA is in hair thinning. This is due to DHEA being precursor to DHT or dihyrostestosterone. DHT is the same reason why there is increase of libido among men and the corresponding hair thinning as well.
If you want to avoid hair thinning or hair loss in general, you may need to stop taking DHEA supplementation. DHEA is a hormone naturally produced by the body. Although it diminishes its production as you age. Using DHEA supplementation may adversely affect your hair, it may be beneficial to your alertness but if it may cause you to be restless. It may be a problem later on.
It is therefore necessary to avoid supplementing with DHEA if your want to avoid loosing your hair and experiencing its side effects. Hair thinning is surely going to stop if you stop using DHEA.
