Google dance has raised so many questions from webmasters. Its either the page rank has changed or a page is missing on the search results – and many of these type of questions. It pays to have a better understanding of Google dance just to make sure that the next time Google performs its update, you won’t have to cross your brows and worry.

Google Dance

Google dance refers to the index update that the search engine performs every month. During the Google dance, there are significant changes that occur in search results. Some pages that used to have a PR value suddenly appear to have no PR value. The Google dance also affects the number of inbound links on a particular site which results to a reduced PR Value for that site. These changes happen to all sites and pages that form part of the Google’s index.Google dance can last for days and there is nothing you can do except to sit back and wait for the update to be done.

Why has my PR value went down?

PageRank value of a particular page can dramatically go down due to many reasons. It may be frustrating to see your page’s PR go down but knowing the reason behind will somehow help you remedy the PR reduction. Here some of the most common reasons why PR can go down:

Penalty

Google may have issued a page or some of your site’s pages a certain penalty that has caused your PR to go down. This is the common reason of PR reduction.

Internal Link Changes

There are times when a particular PR goes down following the update after making internal link changes.

Changes in Google’s Index

Sometimes it appears that your page’s rank has gone down when actually it did not. It may be the result of the increase in Google’s index which causes some changes in the toolbar’s representation. How? What Google does is divide the number of pages in its index into 10 categories or divisions. These divisions are represented by a certain number in the toolbar – ranging from 1 to 10. This simple formula is how Google arrives with the toolbar figure – this is not the actual PR but just a representation of which PR division a certain page belongs to.

If additional sites will be added on the index, these sites will have their PRs and take their place on the divisions. Some pages on a particular division may have changed their position and placement. This does not mean that your PR has been reduced. The page has just moved down because additional pages were added.

Why are my pages not included in the search results?

Sounds exasperating but true. Pages may actually disappear during a Google update and here are some reasons for the disappearance:

Pages disappear after an update

Pages and the entire site can actually vanish from Google search results after an update. However, it will just be brought back after the next update. This is called a glitch and Google corrects it on the next update.

Google’s penalty

A certain site may disappear on search result due to penalties. Google may remove pages or the entire site on the index as a penalty.

New Pages

A fresh page on the index can be very unstable. It may appear then disappear until the page has been crawled and has undergone the following update.

How will I check my PR during Google Dance?

Google has data centers which can help you identify the Toolbar PR of your site’s pages. These data centers are updated during the Google Dance. They can give you details about your page’s new PR values during the Google Dance. If the PR of a specific page doesn’t have any changes or increase, the data centers will reveal the same PR all throughout the Google dance.
To be able to use the data centers, you must have installed the Google Toolbar and the Page rank indicator. During the update, the toolbar requests the PR details of your page on one of these data centers.

How will I know that Google has started the update?

Google’s data centers provide the same number of inbound links to any page or site. During Google dance, a particular data center shows number of links different from what the other center provides. This signifies that the Google dance has started. To check, type link: yahoo.com into the search on each of the data centers. This will give you insights on the different results these centers will show.
Google dance can have deliberate effects on your rank, position and visibility. However, everything comes back to normal after the update.
