Most intercom systems pick up distant noises such as a fall or cry, alerting you to issues that require a response. You can monitor a room where a baby is sleeping or where a family member who is "under the weather" may be resting.

Some intercom systems are not designed for two-way talking with any other station besides the master station. This means that the master station will be the only station hearing the sounds picked up by substations. However, there are affordable systems that give the ability to listen and talk from any station with any station.
