Residential Care Homes

Residential care homes provide short-term and long-term personal care, and can care for residents' minor illnesses, but don't provide 24 hour nursing care. A residential care home may be the best choice if you (or your relative) are fairly independent and are not suffering from any serious medical conditions that require a lot of care.

Different residential homes provide different services and levels of care, but generally they will offer basic personal care, such as helping residents to wash and dress, ensuring that they are provided with a balanced and nutritious diet, and managing the treatment of straightforward medical conditions.

Most well-run residential care homes also offer a range of social activities, and residents are able to maintain their independence by going out, having visitors and making decisions about various aspects of their care.

Nursing Homes

Nursing homes are usually more expensive to stay in than residential homes, but in addition to providing personal care and social activities, they also provide 24-hour nursing care. They are suitable for people who need medical care after they have been discharged from hospital, or for people requiring longer term care who suffer from more complicated or high-maintenance medical conditions.

If you are looking for a care home for a relative who is particularly frail or who is bedridden, the more intensive care provided in a nursing home may make it more suitable for them than a residential care home.

Some nursing home specialise in offering care for residents suffering from particular conditions, such as Alzheimer's or Parkinson's, so if you or your relative have specific health concerns, it's worth checking out what the nursing homes in your area offer.

Choosing a Care Home

It's important to ensure that you are choosing the right type of care home, so contact your local social services department and ask for a needs assessment. This will help you to decide which type of care home is most appropriate for you or your relative.

Once you've decided on the type of home that you're looking for, you can start looking at the care homes in your area and making a shortlist of homes to consider. You can find out about the services that they offer by consulting an online care homes guide or by ringing them and requesting a brochure. Once you've made a shortlist, you can visit these care homes and see what you think.
