So, I decided to focus on this topic this week because it is my sister's 35th birthday on Wednesday. Tami, Happy Birthday! As we get older, it is easy to push celebrations aside for more "important" things in life. I remember many birthdays over the past couple of years where I was lucky to get a cupcake. Don't get me wrong, it was a very delicious cupcake, but maybe not quite what I had in mind.
Our children were young, our anniversary was the same week, school was just beginning, so it was a hectic time. But as I said, it's far too easy to come up with excuses and put celebrations aside. I think celebrating special events or accomplishments will down the road become your most cherished memories. I am not saying you need to hire a quartet for every birthday, or fly off to Italy for your anniversary, but you need to celebrate in a way that means something special to you. This last birthday of mine, several girlfriends on different occasions took me out to lunch to celebrate.
It was nothing extravagant, but just the thought that they wanted to do something special, and the time we had together was very meaningful. I know some people don't like to make "big deals" out of birthdays or anniversaries, but sometimes it is the small gestures that go a long way. I am sure you all remember a time when someone went out of their way to celebrate a special day for you. How did it make you feel? These are the times that stand out and put a smile on your face, so celebrate your own occasions as well as those of your friends and colleagues.
ACTION TIPS FOR THE WEEK:
1. Celebrate your own
Commit to celebrating your own special occasions. Do you have a birthday, anniversary, or special accomplishment coming up? Treat yourself to something nice on your birthday. Surprise your spouse with a beautiful card or outing for your anniversary. Maybe you set the record for sales at work? Make sure you acknowledge your hard work and commitment.
2. Acknowledge others
You can make someone's day by remembering a special occasion of their's. Put a birthday card in the mail. Take someone out to lunch. Deliver balloons and a card for an accomplishment someone else achieved. You will be amazed how good it feels to shine the light on someone else. If a co-worker does a great job on a task, make sure to take the time to acknowledge them.
3. Let go of guilt
Sometimes guilt gets in the way of celebrating. You may experience guilt of spending money on something that could go towards something more practical. You may have guilt of leaving your kids to spend a day by yourself. You may feel awkward accepting praise and congratulations for a job well done. Just try to be in the moment and enjoy the celebration for what it is. Everyone deserves time and attention every now and then. Enjoy~
