Everybody will have hobbies. Be it a sport, game or just simply sitting around doing nothing. Hobbies are activities or interest pursued outside one's regular occupation and primary for the purpose of deriving pleasure. In other words, hobbies are fun and thrilling and it's no surprise that people are using hobbies as stress relief.

There are many great things you can do for stress relief, but it's not always easy to stick with them. However, stress relievers that are fun do seem to be easier to practice on a regular basis as you look forward to them! The role of hobbies in stress reduction is evident and indulging in one is a fun way to keep you from stressing too much. It gives you a break from tiresome work and let you focus on something that interests you.

How do you go about selecting one that is suitable for you? Here are some questions to ask yourself before you "dive" in:

1. Do you like or enjoy doing things alone?

If you are, then consider taking up hobbies like arts, crafts, reading, sewing and fishing. These are activities that are not dependent on others, which you can go about doing and enjoying them all alone.

2. Do you like to be in groups?

If you are, then seek hobbies that include other people. There are many such activities for you to choose from. You can consider joining some group activities like hiking and biking, horseback ridding, basketball, football and golf etc

3. Do you like to play to win?

If you are one that enjoys winning in everything you do, then consider taking up some competition sports. Join sports club that promote participation in competition or sports events. However, a word of caution. Unlike other hobbies, competition sports are not exactly stress relievers. In fact, it may even be associated with some health problem like raise blood pressure, palpitation as you tend to be more stressed while taking part in competition (You can read more on how does stress affect sports)

4. Do you have to be an expert in things that you do?

If you are, chances are that you would not take up hobbies that you are not familiar with. You tend to restrict yourself to things that you are best in. If you are a creative person, then creative crafts and arts may be what you are looking for. If you were an analytical person, you would enjoy playing with puzzles.

5. Would you put a price tag on everything?

If you do, you would most likely opt out of hobbies that involve money. Sports like golf, skating etc may not appeal to you, as you would likely need to spend on buying some equipment. If you are one that expects monetary returns in anything you participate, then consider taking up hobbies that are somehow related to your work like paid writing, paid web design etc.

As you can see, your choice of hobbies as stress relief is plenty. All you need to do is to choose one that you are most interested and one that suits your personality. The pleasure that you derive from these activities will ultimately helps you to reduce stress.
